When travelers start planning their first trip to Italy, the temptation is usually to see as many cities as possible in a short window. However, I have found that the most enjoyable trips are not defined by how many places you visit, but by how much you actually get to experience each one.
This 9 day Italy itinerary shows you how to combine the history of Rome with the coastal beauty of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. By using two strategic bases, you avoid the exhaustion of moving hotels every few days while still seeing the best of the region.

Part 1: The Heart of the Empire (Days 1 to 4 in Rome)
Rome is a city that requires a comfortable pace. Four nights here allow you to settle in and experience the major landmarks without feeling like you are rushing through a checklist.
Day 1: Arrival and Easing into Rome
After arriving and settling into your hotel, the goal is to shake off travel fatigue. Depending on your energy level, you might choose one of these low-impact ways to get started:
Option A: A private golf cart tour to get your bearings across the city.
Option B: An early evening food tour through a local neighborhood like Trastevere.

Day 2: Vatican City
Early access is highly recommended here. By visiting the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica before the mid-day crowds arrive, you can actually appreciate the scale and artistry of the site. It is one of those experiences that is worth doing correctly.
Day 3: Ancient Rome and the Colosseum
This day focuses on the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. This is where a knowledgeable private guide makes a significant difference. They turn what could feel like a walk through ruins into a clear understanding of the history that shaped the world.
Day 4: Flexibility and Personal Interests
I like to build in a day that caters to your specific interests. You might choose a high-speed train to Florence for art and architecture, a private driver to the quiet hilltop town of Orvieto, or simply a slow day enjoying the local culture of Rome at your own pace.
Part 2: The Gateway to the Coast (Days 5 to 8 in Sorrento)
For this portion of the trip, I often recommend basing in Sorrento. It is central, easy to navigate, and provides seamless access to the Amalfi Coast and Capri without the logistical headaches of staying in the smaller coastal towns.

Day 5: The Transition through Pompeii
Travel by high-speed train to Naples, where a private driver will meet you for a transition day that actually adds to the experience. You will stop in Pompeii for a guided tour and enjoy a winery lunch on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius before arriving in Sorrento to settle in.
Day 6: Capri by Private Boat
Seeing Capri from the water is a completely different experience than taking the public ferry. A boat excursion allows you to explore the coastline, swim in the grottos, and visit Anacapri at your own pace.

Day 7: The Amalfi Coast Drive
Today is about the iconic views. With a private driver, you can visit Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello without the stress of navigating the narrow coastal roads yourself. You are free to enjoy the scenery while your driver handles the logistics.
Day 8: A Free Day in Sorrento
This day is left open for a reason. After a week of exploring, having a day without a fixed schedule is often the highlight of the trip. You might visit a local lemon farm, take a cooking class, or simply enjoy the atmosphere of Sorrento at your leisure.
Day 9: Departure
A private transfer will take you back to Naples for your departure.
Why This 9 Day Italy Itinerary Works
This itinerary works because it is realistic. You are not moving every couple of nights, and you are not trying to fit an entire country into a single week. Instead, you have:
Two Strong Bases: Rome and Sorrento act as your anchors so you can settle in.
Smooth Transitions: Every move between cities is treated as part of the experience, not just a travel day.
A Balanced Schedule: You have a mix of private guided tours and plenty of time to explore on your own.
