Greece is a destination where it is very easy to do too much. After all, there are over 200 inhabited islands to explore! Most itineraries have you rushing between ferries and repacking your suitcase constantly. This plan is designed to be the opposite.

This sample itinerary is for travelers who want the iconic views and ancient history but also want to actually sit down and enjoy a long lunch. You will start in Athens, move to the dramatic cliffs of Santorini, and finish in Crete, where the atmosphere is local and the food is incredible.

Days 1 to 2: Athens

Athens is a high-energy city that serves as the perfect introduction to the trip. While your time here is focused, it is designed to hit the most significant historical highlights before you head to the islands.

Day 1: Welcome to the Capital

After you transfer to your hotel and shake off the jet lag, take a stroll through the Plaka. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city and is perfect for a slow afternoon. For dinner, a rooftop spot is the way to go. There is something about seeing the Acropolis lit up for the first time that makes the whole trip feel real.

Day 2: History and Architecture

Spend the morning with a private guide exploring the Acropolis and the Parthenon. Having an expert along means you get the stories behind the marble rather than just the dates. The afternoon includes time at the Acropolis Museum, which is a modern masterpiece in itself and provides the necessary context for the ruins you explored earlier in the day.

Days 3 to 5: Santorini

The photos of Santorini are beautiful, but being there is about the atmosphere. This is the part of the trip where you can finally settle in and enjoy the view.

Day 3: The First Caldera View

After traveling from Athens to Santorini, the afternoon is all about the caldera. Whether you are staying in Oia or the quieter Imerovigli, this is usually the day my clients finally stop checking their watches and start to relax.

Day 4: Santorini from the Water

I love sending clients out on the water. Seeing the caldera from a private boat gives you a perspective of the volcanic cliffs that you simply cannot get from the land. You can visit the hot springs and hidden coastal spots, far away from the foot traffic in town.

Day 5: Volcanic Vines

Santorini’s wine scene is one of the most interesting in Europe. Because of the volcanic soil, the vines are grown in low baskets to protect them from the wind. A half day spent tasting these unique varietals while looking over the Aegean is a highlight for almost everyone I work with.

Days 6 to 8: Crete

If Santorini is the glamour of the trip, Crete is the soul. It is larger, a bit more rugged, and famous for its hospitality.

Day 6: A Change of Pace

When you arrive in Crete, you will notice the shift immediately. It feels less like a postcard and more like a home. Spend your first evening in Heraklion wandering the waterfront or finding a quiet taverna for your first taste of Cretan olive oil.

Day 7: Ancient Mysteries

Head to Knossos Palace, the center of the ancient Minoan civilization. It is a fascinating site that feels very different from the ruins in Athens. Afterward, explore Heraklion’s local markets to see where the famous food culture of the island really begins.

Day 8: The Joy of a "Nothing" Day

I intentionally leave this day open. Crete is the perfect place to explore a tiny mountain village, find a secluded beach, or take a local cooking class. Not every day needs a schedule. Sometimes the best memories come from an unscripted afternoon at a seaside cafe.

Day 9: One Last Athens Evening

Return to Athens for your final night. This takes the stress out of your departure and gives you one last evening for a great Mediterranean meal and some final shopping before you head home.

Day 10: Departure

Your driver will take you to the airport for your flight home, feeling refreshed rather than exhausted.

Why This Itinerary Works

I don't believe in one size fits all travel. While this itinerary serves as a great starting point, I customize all travel itineraries to the client. This route works because it respects your time. By focusing on Strategic Stays in just three locations, you get to actually know Greece instead of just seeing it through a ferry window.
